About Our School

For generations of Steubenville children, McKinley Elementary School was more than a classroom—it was a neighborhood landmark where friendships were formed, lessons were learned, and memories were created.

The first McKinley School was built in 1914 on Pleasant Heights, serving families in one of Steubenville’s growing residential areas. As the community expanded, so did the need for modern educational facilities. A new McKinley Elementary building was later constructed behind the original school, reflecting Steubenville’s continued commitment to providing quality learning spaces for its students.

For decades, McKinley was a gathering place for generations of children, teachers, and families. The school became a familiar part of daily life on Pleasant Heights, hosting academic programs, activities, and community events that helped shape the experiences of countless students.

In 2019, McKinley began a new chapter as the McKinley STEM Academy. After extensive renovations, the former school facility was transformed into a specialized learning environment focused on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. The academy was created to bring hands-on, project-based learning opportunities to elementary students while continuing the tradition of innovation and achievement associated with the McKinley name.

Today, McKinley STEM Academy honors more than a century of educational history while preparing students for the future. From its beginnings as a neighborhood elementary school in 1914 to its transformation into a STEM-focused academy in 2019, McKinley remains a symbol of Steubenville’s dedication to learning, creativity, and community pride.
